Our brief was to design a family house, which was sympathetic to its context and reflected current concerns of sustainability. As a practice we are committed to working with existing buildings but are also concerned that new buildings should benefit from new materials and technologies that reflect the time in which they are created. From our initial assessment of the condition off the existing buildings we concluded that their replacement with one compact building was the best option. To reduce the impact to the adjacent Wades Lane we decided to limit the majority of the building to one storey, whilst allowing distant views of the Stour and Orwell rivers from a room in the semi roof space.
